B4 | Confirm your Business Case

You’ve explored multiple business cases. Now it’s time to decide which one you’ll work with — and commit.

This is a key moment in your journey. From this point onward, your chosen business case will shape your export plan. Changing it later will only be allowed in exceptional cases, so be sure of your direction.

Tell us which case you’re going for, and explain why you think this is the right match for you. Your answer should reflect both personal motivation and professional logic. Keep it short, clear, and in Business English.

Assignments for students

Let us know which role and business case you’ve chosen.
Furthermore, you’ve got to explain:

Why you are convinced of having made the best possible choice for both the role and business case;
Why you are the best person for developing the export-marketing plan.

How? You’ve got two options. It’s up to you which one you like most.

Option 1 – Write your motivation
A short written reflection is perfectly fine. Just make it focused, professional, and no longer than needed.

Option 2 – Submit a short video (max. 2 minutes)

As you know, it’s becoming more common for recruiters and employers to request that candidates submit a video as part of their job application. Take a look at this simple but effective video application of Sajita Nair. Obviously, opting for a specific role and business case is not exactly the same but there are few similarities though. For you, it’s an opportunity to sell yourself and demonstrate your communication skills and creative flair in a way that’s not necessarily available through a letter, e-mail or by answering a set of questions.

For some people, the thought of creating a video can be daunting. There are a few things to keep in mind: it is not only what you’ll say, but also how you’ll present on camera and all the technical aspects of creating a video. However, with some planning and widely available apps and software, you can create a professional looking video that leaves a lasting impression for all the right reasons.

Before making the video, just run through the set of questions. You do not have to answer them literally though, use them as a guideline.

Option 3 – Answer the set of questions written as a movie script.

Just look at it this way: all your answers together, should form an unique story about the choices you’ve made so far. And, of course, why you are opting for a specific role and business case. Make sure your answering is concise, to the point and in Business English.

Case method | Cooperative learning

Concrete, realistic situations are individually analysed; afterwards, the resulting vision is presented and discussed in the group.
The individual’s vision is reappraised after seeking additional information. The different visions are selected and appraised.

Group discussion (or problem-solving discussion) | Dialogue

Reflective discussion as part of a group, pooling knowledge/ideas/opinions with the aim of learning from this. A stimulus to creative, problem-solving and evaluative thinking.
Someone (teacher or student in a smaller group) is appointed as moderator. Without impinging on the subject matter, this person guides the discussion through the different phases (defining the problem, defining the scope of the subject, dissecting the problem, seeking solutions, discussing propositions, formulating the conclusion).
Pitfall: students must have sufficient background knowledge.
Variants: one empty chair, carousel discussion, triangular discussion, forum discussion/panel, debate, with or without a role.

Learning discussion (or evaluation or discussion method) | Dialogue

Discussion (individual or as part of a group) about the learning experiences of the student; the teacher acts as moderator and remains in the background. The emphasis is on (learning) how to identify learning moments: what could have been improved and how?

Lecture method | Content-based

Suitable for the structuring information, orientation, establishing links with other subject matter, providing explanations for difficult study material.
Beware of the decrease in learning efficiency 5 minutes after starting.

Storytelling | Content-based

Presentation of poems, eye-witness reports, etc. The more authentic, the better.

Teacher-led class discussion | Dialogue

A carefully managed dialogue in which students - through questioning - are invited to contribute their own ideas in a direction desired by the teacher. Effective control of the questioning is crucial.
Tip? Ask clear-cut questions, try to involve all the students, probe further, etc.

Word web (or mindmap) | Group activity

A topic or problem definition is written on the board.

Together in small groups, students create a word web by association. In this way, they add words which fit in with the central theme, pointing out what the relationships are (e.g. elements which link them to each other are given a specific colour). Everything is written down clearly and legibly.
After the group session, each word web is explained to the rest of the class by a representative of the group.
