A good pitch is very important, and you can learn a lot by watching others.

Are you familiar with Dragon’s Den, a TV show where entrepreneurs present their business ideas to a group of successful investors called Dragons? They hope to get money from the Dragons in exchange for a share of their company. Dragon’s Den started in Japan and is now popular in many countries.

In this assignment, you’ll discover the criteria for a great pitch. Ready to see some examples?

What to do?

Watch three pitches
Watch the following three Dragon’s Den pitches on YouTube. Pay close attention to how each entrepreneur presents their idea, handles questions, and interacts with the Dragons. While watching, make detailed notes that answer the question: Why is this (not) a good pitch? Focus on identifying what makes the pitch strong or weak.
Find pitch criteria
After watching, write down 5-7 things that make a pitch strong. These are called criteria. Think about what makes the pitch clear, engaging, and convincing. Submit your 5-7 criteria using the form when you click on the Core button.

Assessment criteria

1. Quantity

Pass: The student submits at least 5 criteria that are important for a strong pitch.
Merit/Distinction: The student submits up to 7 criteria that are important for a strong pitch.

2. Relevance

Pass: The student lists criteria that are relevant to making a good pitch, showing an understanding of what makes a pitch successful.
Merit/Distinction: The student lists criteria that are not only relevant but also demonstrate a deep understanding and insight into what makes a pitch truly effective. The criteria reflect critical thinking and strategic awareness.

Case method | Cooperative learning

Concrete, realistic situations are individually analysed; afterwards, the resulting vision is presented and discussed in the group.
The individual’s vision is reappraised after seeking additional information. The different visions are selected and appraised.

Check in pairs | Group activity

The students carry out individual assignments. Afterwards, in pairs, they check their answers with those of the other student. If their answers differ, they must find out which of the answers is correct.
The answers can be compared again with another pair (or with answer sheets).
Final phase: check in the class. The teacher only discusses questions where pairs were not able to reach an agreement.

Group discussion (or problem-solving discussion) | Dialogue

Reflective discussion as part of a group, pooling knowledge/ideas/opinions with the aim of learning from this. A stimulus to creative, problem-solving and evaluative thinking.
Someone (teacher or student in a smaller group) is appointed as moderator. Without impinging on the subject matter, this person guides the discussion through the different phases (defining the problem, defining the scope of the subject, dissecting the problem, seeking solutions, discussing propositions, formulating the conclusion).
Pitfall: students must have sufficient background knowledge.
Variants: one empty chair, carousel discussion, triangular discussion, forum discussion/panel, debate, with or without a role.

Learning discussion (or evaluation or discussion method) | Dialogue

Students learn how to find solutions for themselves (via diagrams, plans, outlines, etc.)
Discussion (individual or as part of a group) about the learning experiences of the student; the teacher acts as moderator and remains in the background. The emphasis is on (learning) how to identify learning moments: what could have been improved and how?

Simulation game | Cooperative learning

Role play with a well-defined structure. Conditions and requirements are attached to the roles. Because of its more theme-related nature, students feel less inhibited; more targets are attained with a cognitive focus.
For example: training for sales techniques, telephone enquiries, etc.

Word web (or mindmap) | Group activity

A topic or problem definition is written on the board.

Together in small groups, students create a word web by association. In this way, they add words which fit in with the central theme, pointing out what the relationships are (e.g. elements which link them to each other are given a specific colour). Everything is written down clearly and legibly.
After the group session, each word web is explained to the rest of the class by a representative of the group.
