A strong event location matches the purpose, the people, and the practical needs of the day. In this assignment, you’ll step into the role of a location scout: your task is to identify a suitable place for a real public event, based on a realistic case.

This case is designed to make you think about what matters when choosing a site — from accessibility and crowd flow to budget and logistics. The key? Letting the event and its audience guide your decision.

You’ll read a short case about a public event, then nominate a location for it — somewhere within 20–25 km of where you live or go to school.
You’ll explain your choice using 5 core criteria, and as many additional considerations as you find relevant.

What to do

1. Read the case

A municipality in your region is looking for a suitable location for a one-day public event. The goal is to promote local health and creativity through workshops, performances and shared meals. The event is free of charge and aimed at a diverse local audience — families, young people, seniors, and local volunteers.

Around 300–400 visitors are expected throughout the day. Activities include a kids’ zone, community art, music (unplugged), and food stands run by local entrepreneurs.
Accessibility is essential: the location must be safe, easy to reach by bike, foot and public transport, and suitable for people with limited mobility.
The site must allow for flexible use of space (quiet areas, active zones, food section), and basic facilities must be available or possible to install (restrooms, waste disposal, signage).
No sound permits are granted; the event must be low-noise. The budget is modest and must cover all logistics, including set-up and volunteer support.

Local suppliers must be able to access the site before and after the event.

2. Nominate a location
Choose a real public location within 20 to 25 km of where you live or go to school. This can be a park, square, street, courtyard or any other public place where events take place.

Brainstorming | Group activity

A clear problem definition marks the starting point.

In each group, one student will note down the reactions, ideas, views, etc. of the others. The various opinions are not dealt with in any depth.
After a while, the group discusses the proposed solutions and picks out the best of these.
